First of all, I just want to thank all the new subscribers! Welcome to Diverse Voices Media where it's more than just a platform—it's a safe space for people of color and those from underrepresented communities to share their stories. It was born from my own experiences, struggles, and a deep desire to speak up for my people and others like us.

My Journey: The Drive to Tell Stories That Matter
I always knew I wanted to be a journalist, driven by a passion to tell the stories of my people—the struggles we face as Palestinians. I believed that journalism could be a powerful way to shed light on these struggles, to bring truth to the forefront. But when I graduated, I quickly realized how difficult it was to break into the mainstream media industry.
While many of my white classmates easily found jobs in mainstream media after university, my path was much more challenging. Despite applying to hundreds of entry-level positions, I couldn’t land a single interview. Eventually, I took a job in Public Relations—an experience I appreciated, though it wasn’t where my passion lay. Meanwhile, I continued freelancing, determined to make my voice heard on smaller media platforms. I wrote personal stories, grounded in my identity and the truths of my community (read here). But those stories came with a price. Every time I applied for jobs in mainstream media, employers would search my name and find those articles. It felt like they saw them as a blemish—a sign that I didn’t fit into their idea of what a journalist should be.
The breaking point came when I finally got a job on a big documentary production about the Muslim community in Australia. I thought this would be the opportunity I had been waiting for—to finally be a part of Australia's mainstream media landscape. However, I quickly realized how controlled the narrative really is. The stories of the Muslim community were filtered, shaped, and repackaged to fit a particular perspective.
Why Diverse Voices Media Exists
This experience was a painful reminder of how mainstream media often dictates what stories get told and how they are framed. As much as I wanted to speak up for my people, particularly the plight of the Palestinians, it became clear that mainstream media wasn’t the place where I could do that freely. I didn’t just want to tell stories that fit into someone else's box; I wanted to tell stories that mattered—to me, to my community, and to others whose voices were being silenced.
That’s why I started Diverse Voices Media. It’s a platform where people of color and individuals from underrepresented backgrounds can share their stories without fear of being shut down or sidelined. We need spaces where our experiences are valued, where our voices are heard, and where we can speak our truths unapologetically.
